1919: The Great Corpus Christi Hurricane

The Great Corpus Christi Hurricane of 1919 was one of the most devastating natural disasters in the history of Corpus Christi, Texas. On September 14, 1919, a powerful Category 4 hurricane made landfall near the city, bringing with it winds exceeding 130 miles per hour and a massive storm surge that inundated the downtown area. The hurricane caused widespread destruction, with much of the city's infrastructure, homes, and businesses being heavily damaged or destroyed.

The human toll of the hurricane was significant, with over 280 people losing their lives, and thousands more were left homeless. The storm surge swept away entire neighborhoods, and the city's port facilities were severely damaged, disrupting trade and commerce for months. The disaster highlighted the vulnerability of coastal communities to hurricanes and underscored the need for better preparedness and infrastructure to withstand such events.

In the aftermath of the hurricane, Corpus Christi embarked on a massive rebuilding effort. The city invested in stronger seawalls, improved drainage systems, and other protective measures to mitigate the impact of future storms.
