Larry Hovis was born on February 20, 1936, in Wapato, Washington, but moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, at a young age, where he grew up. He attended Corpus Christi High School (now known as Roy Miller High School) and later enrolled at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, where he studied theater arts. His early involvement in local theater productions and his love for performance were nurtured in Corpus Christi, laying the foundation for his future career in entertainment. Hovis's Texas upbringing played a significant role in shaping his charm and sense of humor, traits that would serve him well in his career as an actor and singer.
Early Career in Music and Transition to Acting (1958–1965)
Larry Hovis initially started his career as a singer, performing with a group called The Mascots and recording an album in the 1950s. However, it was his transition into acting that defined his career. After moving to Los Angeles, Hovis found success in stand-up comedy and stage performances, eventually making his way to television. His first TV appearances were on shows like Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. and The Andy Griffith Show. Hovis's comedic timing and likable screen presence quickly made him a favorite for television roles.
Breakthrough Role on "Hogan’s Heroes" (1965–1971)
Larry Hovis's most famous role came in 1965 when he was cast as Sergeant Andrew Carter on the hit television show Hogan’s Heroes, a World War II-themed sitcom set in a German POW camp. Hovis played the affable and somewhat naive explosives expert, providing much of the show’s comedic relief. His performance as Sergeant Carter made him a household name during the show's run from 1965 to 1971. Larry Hovis passed away on September 9, 2003, from esophageal cancer in Austin, Texas, at the age of 67. Corpus Christi remembers Hovis as one of its most successful entertainment figures, and his impact on both television and theater continues to be celebrated.
